New Zealand Mountainbike Tours

Multi Day Trip FAQ's

What kind of information will I receive to prepare for my bike trip?

Before the tour commences you will receive a "Pre Departure Pack" with detailed information on everything you need to know before you start. This helpful info pack includes tips on travelling with your bike, packing tips for bikes on planes, currency conversions, detailed list of what to bring, an insight on the locations you will be visiting, local weather info, even a helpful contact list to get you started.

What is included in my price?

Included on all trips: trained mountain bike guides, coaching service, location specific professional guides/coaches, expert leadership, all accommodation, all meals (except lunches and one dinner on certain trips), airport pick ups/drop offs, transport service, a Freeride NZ t-shirt, land permission, ferry crossing, and helicopter flights on applicable tours. Tours will vary with the specifics of what’s included but are all clearly stated on our web site for each tour.

What is not included in my price?

Not included on trips: your bike and bike riding equipment (we can however arrange these items for you), airfare, insurance of any kind, excess baggage charges and items of a personal nature: snacks, alcoholic beverages, laundry, etc. We recommend that participant’s budget for NZ$20 extra spending per day.

What is the group size and eligibility?

Our groups are between 6 and 12 participants, with 2 guides per group. Often, a third guide or locals will provide extra support throughout the trip. Our groups are kept small so that we can ensure that every participant is well looked after. Also, with this number, we can give each other space while riding, yet be sure that everyone is on the right track. Participants must be 18 and over, unless accompanied by an adult. If you are under 18 please contact us and we will see if alternative arrangements can be made if you can not be accompanied by an adult.

Can I bring my bike on the plane?

Yes. Most major airlines consider your bike as one of two pieces of checked on luggage. In other words, bringing your bike is free. Note: when flying domestically you might be charged. Information on packing you bike will be inside your “Pre Departure Pack” that will be sent out upon booking your trip.

Can I rent a mountain bike for my tour?

Yes you can rent a bike for the whole duration of the tour. Rental bike prices depend on the type of bike and the number of days needed for. Contact us for more information.

What do I need to bring?

All you need to bring besides your riding is a mechanically sound bike, related bike equipment and personal gear. We will send you a detailed clothing and equipment list in your “Pre Departure Pack”.

Does Freeride NZ offer tours of New Zealand that are not biking related?

Yes, Freeride NZ can organise tour packages that are not mountain bike related which include a vehicle/driver to assist in your tour of NZ. We can also help by working with you to make a itinerary that best suits your needs. Contact us for more information.

How fit should I be?

Our trips vary in difficulty but generally they are suited for fit-intermediate (sport level) to expert riders. A fit-intermediate rider is one who can on average ride 2 – 4 hours per day, for several days in a row. On our trips we do our best to give you as much riding as possible however there are no compulsory rides so if you need a break you can elect to skip a day's riding or a portion of it depending on logistics. Inevitably there will be slower and faster riders in each group, but from experience the differences in ability work themselves out: some will simply enjoy the view for a little longer. You will get more enjoyment out of any trip if you are in good physical condition. Feel free to ask questions prior to booking regarding fitness levels for your desired tour.

How long will I be riding for each day?

We can spend from two to a max of seven hours on the bike each day depending on the type of trip you elect and the particular day. Please contact us to find out the specifics of your tour.

What style of accommodation should I expect?

Generally we use lodging style. As for location it is of up most importance to Freeride NZ that our tours are kept fresh, unique and show a true taste of New Zealand. Much of our accommodation is off the beaten track. For riders travelling alone, limited single rooms are available for a supplemental fee. If you do not request a single room we will then match you up with a roommate of the same gender.

How technical are the trails?

Our goal is for every body to enjoy the ride and for full participation, not to scare and put off riders. Every location has a wide Varity of graded trails and we begin each tour on less technical trails and progress from there. Contact us to find out detailed information on the trails.

Can you help me with my air travel arrangements and extending my trip?

Yes, we would be happy to help you with arrangements if you decide to extend your trip before or after your Freeride NZ adventure. We can help with your night’s accommodation before and after your adventure etc. Contact us.

Do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance is very strongly advised. With it, you will avoid the unfortunate loss of funds due to an emergency or illness of the participant or companion, or illness or death of an immediate family member. Some cancellation policies also provide baggage loss protection.

Do I need medical insurance?

All Freeride NZ tour participants require medical insurance. We will ask you to fill out a Medical Form with your medical insurance policy information and general medical information. This information will be kept strictly confidential.
