Lead Day Trip Guide Emily Johnston
What is mountain biking for you?
It's an addiction. Its something that I have centered my life around for the past 10 years that Iam very passionate about.
What type of mountain biking do you enjoy?
I love it all, from racing downhill to all day cross country rides and dirt jumping, but there is nothing like a good day of shuttles with a solid riding crew.
What is it about guiding you like the most?
Seeing people experience something new on two wheels- It’s a great way to see a new area. Coaching is rewarding in the same way-I love seeing the newly found confidence and excitement that people have after learning something new or cleaning a difficult section for the first time.
Where has mountain biking taken you?
It’s taken me to some of the most beautiful places that I otherwise never would have seen. I've been lucky enough to ride all over the States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.
Usual ride spot?
Tell us about your favorite ride...
1. Tunnel Trail in Santa Barbara, CA (first DH ride ever-the place that got me hooked)
2. Mount Saint Anne world cup track 2004 (first world cup race)
3. The Post Office jumps in Aptos, CA (best DJ sesh's ever)
4. Any trail on any day in any conditions in the Whistler Bike Park.
5. Resssurectum in Pemberton, BC
6. Any trail for the first time (ok that's 6...told you I wasn't good at favorites...)
What do you see for mountain biking in the future?
I see a similar progression into the mainstream as snowboarding went through, with slopestyle and media friendly formatted events (like the Jeep 48Straight Series) gaining tons of momentum in the coming years. In the States, I hope to see the progress that’s been made in land and trail use rights continue, but I know this will be a struggle (help out Gravity Logic!!!)
What's the best piece of advice you have been given?
If your going to be dumb, you better be tough
